Beate, originally from Germany, is a maker who lives and works on the beautiful Gower Peninsular. She is interested in identity, belonging, people and the spaces between them. Her materials – vitreous enamel on steel, patinated, etched copper and brass as well as paper – bring to life meditations on borders and boundaries, crossings, rhythms and water, always water. Water is continuously in motion, an act of perpetual relation.
Architectural spaces are also important to her. Recent research took her to Northern Italy, walking and photographing the arcaded streets of South Tyrol. Arcades again are active spaces, where perpetual movement takes place and light and dark interacts. Her most recent work led her to investigate fine etching and photo-etching. After etching, she delicately textures and brushes the surfaces before using a variety of surface techniques, such as patination, brush plating and the use of pigments.
Beate Gegenwart and Pippa Neilson are neighbours and they will jointly open their studios and gardens for visitors to browse, to chat about the art works, techniques and inspirations.
Both studios are situated on Sandy Lane, close to Three Cliffs Bay and Pennard Castle.
